Colors of the Ocean Activity- Ocean Theme Unit Day 1

They say that in heaven the colors are more vivid than any colors we have here on earth. Its hard for me to imagine that, considering the colors within the ocean are so bright and beautiful.

Some people might say that the ocean is "blue", but that is just wrong. The ocean is actually a rainbow.

I wanted the kids to understand that there were many colors of the ocean, so we made a rainbow sensory bin. I filled it with rice of different colors that I dyed.

Here's the recipe:

Put 6 cups of rice in a ziploc bag.

Add 1/2 cup of vinegar

Add as many food coloring drops that you need to create the color you like

Shake the bag or stir with a spoon.

Repeat for each color.

Then we added some sea animals to go with each color:

Princess was loving it right away. She got her bucket from the sand box and started to fill it:

We also had scoops and shovels:

Son was soaking wet from playing with the hose while I got the rainbow sensory bin ready. He liked playing with the animals and was making fish noises. Do fish make noise? In his world they sound like tigers:

The mix started to look like Fruity Pebbles. We played with this for an hour in the morning and another hour in the afternoon. The whole activity cost about $10.00 with a 20lb bag of inexpensive rice, food coloring and a bottle of vinegar.
